Pink and Blue

Assigning color to gender is mostly a 20th century trait. At one time, the color associations were reversed when color first came into use as a gender identifier.


 "At one point pink was considered more of a boy's color, (as a watered-down red, which is a fierce color) and blue was more for girls. 

"There has been a great diversity of opinion on the subject, but the generally accepted rule is pink for the boy and blue for the girl. The reason is that pink being a more decided and stronger color is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl." [Ladies Home Journal, June, 1918]

This is part of a campaign for gay rights but its a really nice technique of writing on the body. And i like how its in black and white .. seems timeless

Text on a straight line (placed in a corner)

Top line is straight

Middle line is straight

Bottom Line is straight

Top line is straight - note that the two side lines stay the same, they don't need moved around to look straight.

After experimenting around a bit in class we found out that you can usually make the line straight depending on how you place the camera.

Anamorphic illusions

Anamorphic Illusions are  images which only make sense from one view and can only be truely appreciated from a certain vantage point. What look like random fragmented shapes of colour form an interesting piece of art when viewed from the set point.

Anamorphic type research

The 3 pieces below were done on the street walls in the slums in Sao Paulo. Five artists (Arkoh, Derko, Pahg, Purone and Rdick) along with neighborhood kids and volunteers created it. The words say Love, sweetness, pride and beauty.

I love the bright colours and short words, i think its really eye catching and works well.

The bottom video on this link is amazing. I love the size of it more than anything.

This isn't type but it helps to describe the anamorphic type. I found it on this blog.

I was trying to research how you would figure out the measurements to do anamorphic type. If i were to do this for my project I would need to do alot of small scale test runs to make sure it would work out.

Possible venue

This is the upstairs part of our garage, i could paint over all of the walls and objects that are in it ( would probably need a bit of a clean if i were to use it though)

In my sketchbook I've been experimenting with stampers, I'd love to have a wee go with this one.

Different techniques

I love the second piece here. I think its because the parts that have been cut out are still around the page.

Lyric a day

I found this blog, where a girl has created different pieces using the lyrics of songs. It's quite a nice idea and they have some nice pieces. I might try this, using quotes or proverbs, (short and sweet)... i'm thinking if i limit myself to a certain length of time on each one (30-60 mins) and then i could keep them for future reference of techniques that work, even if i don't finish them. I can always come back to them.

Anthony Burrill is known for his catchy and clever posters that have become words to live by for the design community and beyond. In bold typography, his messages seem a bit in your face and straight to the point, but  it's clean, crisp and refreshing.

Ellen Lupton

Found this website created by Ellen Lupton - It simply describes all aspects of typography, including letter text and grids. It also has simple definitions of words used for typography.

Lupton is curator of contemporary design at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York City and director of the Graphic Design MFA program at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore. An author of numerous books and articles on design, she is a public-minded critic, frequent lecturer, and AIGA Gold Medalist.
